Cause and Effect in European Politics and Law

The Slovaks are most apathic to the EU

Adelina Marini, May 19, 2009

In Slovakia the interest in the EU and the European elections is the lowest, according to the results of the opinion poll of TNS Opinion, quoted by EUobserver. In 2004 only 17 % of the Slovaks voted in the European elections. Instead, the highest interest to the elections for EP showed people in Luxembourg (29%), Ireland (25%) and Malta (23%). The paradox is that 56 % of the Europeans approve the EU and believe that it helps in coping with the negative consequences of Globalisation, according to the poll. The biggest number of supporters to this idea is among young Europeans (65% of the 18-24 years).

The opinion poll also shows that the MEPs should propose more EU spending in the field of education and training. This is what 41% of the respondents think. More investments in economic growth want 31 %, in social affairs and employment - 27 % and in public healthcare - 26 %.

The expectations of the respondents are also the MEP's to attend all meetings and plenary sessions in the EP.
