A new commission to control Lyulin motorway

Adelina Marini, May 13, 2009

The executive director of the National Agency "Road Infrastructure" Yanko Yankov has assigned a committee to oversee the construction process and the keeping the deadlines for "Lyulin" motorway. The committee consists of experts from the Agency which means that they will supervise practically themselves. Their main task would be everyday supervision, the Agency reported only a day after the European Commission decided to unblock 115 mn euro for the motorway and for technical support. To keep the deadlines the Agency recommended the construction company "Mapa - Cengiz" to work 24 hours a day.

The decision for the construction of the motorway was taken in 1998 by the government of Ivan Kostov, now a leader of the opposition DSB (Democrats for Strong Bulgaria). In the end of 2004 the Commission gave a green light for the construction. The contract with the Turkish company has been signed in August 2006 by the then executive director Veselin Gheorgiev who was the main reason for the freezing of the money last year. The deadline for the construction is 3 years and the price - 137 mn euro.
