Cause and Effect in European Politics and Law

Barroso announced his candidacy for a second term

Adelina Marini, June 9, 2009

The Europeans want stable economy and a new financial system. They want job security and help for those who are unemployed. This is what the president of the European Commission Jose Manuel Durao Barroso said regarding the European elections after his meeting with the Czech prime minister Jan Fischer. They discussed the preparation of the European council in Brussels on the 18th and 19th of June. It is then when the EU leaders will discuss the results from the European elections as well as the proposal of the Commission for a new financial architecture which is being also discussed today by the ECOFIN.

In relation to this Barroso will ask the European Council to adopt the ambitious package of the Commission about the financial supervision. "I want agreement on a work plan for the rapid adoption of the legislative proposals based on the Commission proposals, the architecture for the future financial system", Barroso said.

His statement after the meeting with Fischer whose country will in less than a month end its EU Presidency, is in fact a form of presentation of the priorities for the second term. In fact the Czech prime minister has asked to nominate him for a second term. And because, at this point, there are no alternatives, or at least not that acceptable names, it is very likely that Barroso would be again president of the Commission.

He himself has also announced that the results of the European elections forced him make the decision to try a second term. A lot of his Commissioners participated in the elections in their own countries and won. According to Barroso, whose words were quoted yesterday by Commissioner Kuneva, this has proved that people approve the work of the commissioners and, actually, have supported them directly.
